At Safari Drive Uganda, we make that dream a reality. Whether you’re planning a short weekend trip or a month-long self-drive safari, our rooftop tent setups allow you to travel anywhere, anytime, and at your own pace.

Why Choose Rooftop Tent Camping in Uganda?

Uganda is made for adventurous souls. Its diverse landscapes — from tropical forests and crater lakes to golden savannahs — are perfect for a self-drive camping safari. While lodges and guesthouses are plentiful, nothing compares to the independence of camping wherever the road takes you.

Rooftop tent camping offers:

Freedom and flexibility – No fixed itinerary or bookings needed. You can stop wherever the view inspires you.

Comfort in the wild – Sleep off the ground, safe, dry, and elevated above the terrain.

Affordable adventure – Enjoy the full safari experience without paying luxury lodge prices.

Closer connection with nature – Fall asleep to the sounds of wildlife, wake up to misty mornings, and experience Uganda’s raw beauty firsthand.

If you prefer to keep your plans spontaneous or want to explore beyond the main tourist circuit, rooftop tent camping is your best choice.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is particularly well-suited for camping due to its ample storage space and custom canopy with drawers — making it easy to organize luggage, food, and equipment.

Please note: our camping gear rental is only available with vehicle rentals from Safari Drive Uganda. We do not rent gear separately.

If you’d like a bit of extra comfort on the road, you can also rent a 12V electric fridge for $5 per day. It’s great for keeping your drinks cool and storing perishable food.

However, since road conditions in remote areas can be rough, we can’t always repair or replace fridges in the field. If yours stops working, let us know after your trip — we’ll arrange a refund.

What’s Included in the Camping Gear Set

full equipped camping gear We’ve thought of everything so you don’t have to. Each camping setup includes all the essentials for cooking, dining, and sleeping comfortably on the road.

Included in Your Camp Gear Set:

  • Tent – Rooftop
  • Foam mattresses – Comfortable and thick for a good night’s rest
  • Sleeping bags, pillows, and sheets
  • Camping table and chairs
  • Cool box (non-electric)
  • Gas burner, gas bottle, and BBQ grill
  • Plates, cups, bowls, and cutlery (stainless steel)
  • Cooking pots, frying pans, cutting board, and utensils
  • Corkscrew and can opener
  • Coffee plunger – because mornings deserve good coffee
  • Dish towel, detergent, washing line, and pegs
  • Solar table lamp – perfect for lighting up your camp at night

Pro Tip:

Bring a headtorch and a power bank — they’re incredibly useful for night setups and recharging phones while camping in remote areas.

At higher-altitude destinations like Fort Portal, Sipi Falls, and Lake Bunyonyi, temperatures can drop significantly at night. Our sleeping bags are light and ideal for tropical climates, but we recommend packing an extra fleece blanket or warm layer for chilly nights.

Setting Up Your Rooftop Tent

Setting up your rooftop tent is surprisingly simple — you’ll be ready to relax in minutes. When you collect your vehicle, our friendly Safari Drive Uganda team will show you exactly how it works.

Our staff, including Muhire and Jackson, are always happy to demonstrate how to:

  1. Unlatch the tent cover
  2. Unfold the tent using the ladder
  3. Adjust the mattress and bedding
  4. Secure the rainfly and awning

Once you’ve done it once, it’ll feel effortless. Packing it down in the morning takes just as little time — perfect for those early game drives or long travel days.

Why Hire a Car with a Rooftop Tent?

Many travelers see rooftop tents as part of the quintessential African safari experience. Here’s why:

Sleep off the ground: Ideal when the campsite is uneven, muddy, or rocky.

Safety and peace of mind: Some travelers feel safer elevated, especially in wildlife areas. (Don’t worry — animals aren’t interested in tents!)

Quick and convenient: Rooftop tents fold up in minutes, so you can move on to your next adventure without packing hassles.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You’ll need to fold down your tent each time you want to drive.
  • Rooftop setups are slightly more expensive than ground tents.
  • Climbing the ladder can be tricky if you have limited mobility.

That said, for most travelers, the experience and freedom far outweigh these small inconveniences.

Finding Campsites in Uganda

camping in Uganda's national parks You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to camp in Uganda. Almost every national park and major tourist area has safe, scenic campsites — from community-run spots to eco-lodges that welcome campers.

We recommend downloading the free iOverlander app, which lists nearly every campsite and budget lodge across the country. Each listing includes traveler reviews, prices, and directions. Most places don’t require advance booking, giving you full freedom to decide where to stop each day.

Some of our travelers’ favorite campsites include:

Red Chilli Rest Camp – on the edge of Murchison Falls National Park

Kibale Forest Camp – near the chimpanzee tracking area

Bushpig Backpackers – central Kampala, great for your first or last night

Rwenzori View Guesthouse – near Fort Portal, with beautiful mountain views

Lake Nkuruba Campsite – peaceful, surrounded by crater lakes

What to Pack for Your Uganda Camping Safari

Packing light is the golden rule for camping safaris. Most items are easily available in Uganda’s major towns, so you don’t need to bring everything from home.

Here’s our essential packing list for rooftop tent camping:

Essentials

  • Insect repellent and sunscreen (they’re available locally but pricier)
  • First-aid kit and personal medication
  • Refillable water bottle or water purification tablets
  • Flashlight or headtorch
  • Power bank and charging cables
  • Light fleece or sweater for cool nights
  • Hat, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing
  • Swimwear – perfect for a dip in Lake Bunyonyi or the Nile
  • Quick-dry towel

For the Car

  • Soft duffel bags (fit better than hard suitcases)
  • Daypack for hikes and short excursions
  • Spare batteries for torches and cameras
  • Snacks for long drives

Navigation and Connectivity

Download these apps before your trip:

Maps.me – reliable offline GPS navigation

iOverlander – find campsites, fuel stations, and tips from other travelers

Google Translate – helpful for basic communication in remote areas

Entertainment on the Road

Ugandan drives can be long and scenic, so bring some entertainment. Download your Spotify playlists, audiobooks, or podcasts before you leave Wi-Fi. A good story or soundtrack makes the miles fly by!

If you’re a nature lover, we recommend bringing Mammals of East Africa or Birds of East Africa guidebooks — they’re excellent for spotting and identifying Uganda’s incredible wildlife.

Tips for a Smooth Rooftop Tent Camping Safari

Plan fuel stops: Fuel stations are common in towns but scarce in national parks. Always top up before entering remote areas.

Stock up on food: Major supermarkets are found in Kampala, Entebbe, and larger towns like Fort Portal or Kabale. Smaller shops and markets sell fresh produce everywhere.

Respect wildlife: Never feed animals and keep a safe distance. In national parks, stay inside your vehicle unless in designated areas.

Check park fees: Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) manages entry fees, payable at park gates or online.

Stay flexible: Roads can be rough, and travel times may take longer than expected. Leave room for spontaneity — it’s part of the adventure!
